Prayer for the Day – June 14, 2020

Inaugural Post – Launching the Prayer for the Day website

It seems fitting that the inaugural post for PrayerfortheDay.com present the Lord’s prayer.

Luke 11:1-13 New Living Translation (NLT)

Teaching about Prayer

11 Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

Jesus said, “This is how you should pray:[a]

“Father, may your name be kept holy.
    May your Kingdom come soon.
Give us each day the food we need,[b]
and forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
And don’t let us yield to temptation.[c]

Commentary: In the Gospel of Luke the disciples had observed Jesus praying to the Father. Their request suggests that they may have been curious and perhaps fascinated by what they observed. Imagine having Jesus offer, first hand, instruction on how to pray. Fascinating to imagine experiencing this as the disciples did. Although this is referred to as the Lord’s prayer, in the Gospel of John the entire chapter 17 is a record of a prayer Jesus prayed to the Father just before His arrest. It is a very powerful and moving prayer. This can be explored on another day.

This Bible quote is offered in the New Living Translation or NLT. It is much easier to read and understand for new and established Christians believers than say the King James Bible translation or even the New King James.
