John 1:1-5 New Living Translation (NLT)

Prologue: Christ, the Eternal Word

In the beginning the Word already existed.
    The Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created,[a]
and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.[b]

Commentary: When we think of prayer and praying we think of folding our hands, perhaps looking downward or upward, focusing on the words to say as we pray. But rarely do we think of Jesus as the Word. Yet in the beginning of the Gospel of John, John writes of Jesus as “the Word,” that He, Jesus was with God, and the Word was God. As it says in Genesis 1:3-28, God spoke the world into existence, In John 1:3-5 it says God created everything through Him (Jesus) and nothing was created except through Him. And the Word Gave life to everything that was created. And His life brought light to everyone. And that light shines in darkness and darkness can never extinguish it. What a powerful opening to the Gospel of John, one of the four Gospels in the Bible. Thank you Lord for your Word, your truth and your light and all that was created.
